Are Link Building Services the same as SEO? The question has been asked a hundred times, but it never gets old. In fact, I love this question because it gives me a platform from which to teach and extrapolate.
SEO, short for Search Engine Optimization, is typically understood to be the act of optimizing individual pages of your website so that a search engine will treat the pages favorably, and come back to review page content more often.
Link Building is the act of gaining links from other sites, pointed to yours. This is important because search engines treat these links like a popularity contest – the more links you have, the more popular your site.
SEO and link building services share the same common goal; to increase the website’s position in search results. The primary difference between the two is that SEO is “on-page” (on your website), while link building services take advantage of optimized content on other sites, blogs, and social networks.
Years ago, link building was as simple as sending an email to 100 webmasters and asking that they bury a link somewhere on their website that points to your website. It really did not matter if the two websites had similar topics or not, or if the link itself said ‘click here’, ‘learn more’, or ‘go to www.examplesite.com’. Simply having the link was all that mattered. But that’s all changed.
Now, it is critical that effective link building services be employed to optimize your link efforts. Furthermore, these efforts must emulate the on-page SEO of your site in order to gain the best opportunity to rank on the first page of search engine results.
First, the target website should be fully optimized. Once you have each of your individual pages optimized for search engines, and you have employed a strategic keyword-placement strategy on target pages, you are ready to move forward with link building services.
If your site sells blue widgets, red widgets, and yellow swirly widgets, then you should have at least three unique pages (one for each widget type) for link building targets. The next step is to optimize the link itself, as well as the content around the link – and then to have this strategically constructed content placed on proper sites and portals. Placing the links on the ‘wrong’ sites could actually hurt your search engine rankings.
Link building is a long and arduous process that requires accurate deployment in order to capitalize on your investment. Just like with SEO, demand is high for professional Link Building Services, but the investment is worth it.
So are Link Building Services and SEO the same? No they are not; and yet, each is highly dependent on the other for bottom line success.
