What are Affiliate programs?
There are thousands of affiliate programs available online, but It is not the purpose of this article to show affiliate programs you should join; later I will show you what aspects you have to consider before you join an affiliate program. At that point, you should have the basic knowledge to know whether a program is right for you or not.
Let's start by defining what affiliate programs are:
Basically, it is a system that permits participants to obtain a monetary reward (commission) for every sale of a product or service, conducted through a unique affiliate link that identifies each affiliate.
If we break down these terms, we can understand that on the one hand there is a company that has a product or service for sale, which gives people the opportunity to make money by recommending their products or services.
Main Differences between MLM (multi level marketing) and an Affiliate program.
- In MLM, compensation plans are several levels deep.
- In MLM, you become a Distributor Representative of the company and usually sign a contract for this.
- MLM is composed of a Business Opportunity plus a Product or Service that you recommend.
- Most of the times, MLM requires presentations be made in public, requires team meetings and constant training.
Taking into consideration our personal and professional experience, we can always spot a big difference between MLM and affiliate networks. The biggest difference involves your sponsor, who always shows interest or concern in order for you to get good results. Sponsors in MLM provide more training and a more personalized support, and can even work side by side with you until you can do the business for yourself. In contrast, affiliate programs, you generally do not have a sponsor, you have a customized training and you are basically on your own.
What to take into account before joining an affiliate program:
- Company: reputation, time to market, physical address, representatives, terms and conditions.
- Product quality, niche market, demand, testimonials, graphic image, sales letter, cost, etc..
- The percentage or commission which is given for each sale of the product or the exact amount thereof.
- Always read carefully when and how you will collect your commissions and if they have a minimum threshold.
- The affiliate program software used by the company or if using an intermediary company to perform this task (Clickbank, Commission Junction, etc.)
Common Errors affiliates should avoid:
- Send SPAM to "try to promote" the product.
- Try to promote many affiliate programs simultaneously.
- Trying to deceive the company that provides the affiliate program
- Trying to deceive potential customers with hyped up information.
- Perform promotions with a link too long (ideal: your own domain or cloaking service)
